The missed-call
guide
Since October 1, 2026, Google can charge Local Services Ads advertisers for calls they never answered. Here is what changed, why picking up doesn't lower the bill, and the AI receptionist I set up so every one of those calls gets answered, booked and sent to your phone as a text.
Businesses that pay for leads through Google Local Services Ads, Google's pay-per-lead ads for local service businesses. If you don't run them, the billing change doesn't touch you, but the AI receptionist still answers the calls you miss.
What changed on October 1
Google's own help page now spells out when a missed call becomes a lead you pay for:
- A missed call during your business hours is a paid lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.
- A call that goes to voicemail counts the same way: more than 20 seconds on the line, whether or not they leave a message.
- If your phone system says "press 1 for…", the 20 seconds start at the first key press. A caller who never presses a key isn't charged.
- Business hours are the hours in your Google Business Profile. If your ads run on a schedule, only missed calls inside both are charged.
- The same caller is charged once: follow-up calls and messages from the same number or email within 15 days aren't charged again.
Google started charging this way on October 1, 2026, and added these details to its help page on October 8.
Why picking up doesn't lower the bill
An answered call is a paid lead too: it's the first kind of valid lead on Google's list. So answering doesn't make that call cheaper. You pay for it either way, and the only difference is whether it turns into a booked job.
Every call your ad brings in costs you, answered or not. What you control is whether someone picks up and books the work. That's the job of the setup below.
The setup at a glance
Four pieces, in the order a call goes through them. Your phone still rings you first; the AI only takes the calls you don't pick up.
- 01ForwardCalls you miss go to the AI's number
- 02AnswerRetell picks up in your business's name
- 03BookThe job lands in your calendar
- 04Textn8n texts you a summary of the call
Your phone line
Ask your phone provider to forward the calls you don't pick up to the AI's number. It's usually called no-answer or conditional call forwarding. Set it to forward after a few rings, so the caller isn't left waiting, and the ones you do pick up never reach the AI.
- WHAT YOU NEED
- A business phone line that can forward unanswered calls
- COST
- Depends on your phone provider: ask them how to turn it on
Retell: the receptionist
Retell is the voice agent that answers. You get a phone number for it inside Retell (it sells US and Canada numbers), or bring a number you already have. Then you write the instructions it follows on every call: your business name, what you do, the area you cover, your hours, and what to ask every caller, such as their name, number, address and what the job is.
For anything urgent, Retell's transfer tool hands the live call to your cell phone, so an emergency never waits for a callback.

Cal.com: the booking
Retell books appointments through Cal.com. Connect Cal.com to the calendar you already use, such as Google or Outlook, set up the kind of appointment the AI may book and your open hours, then add Retell's Check Availability and Book Appointment tools to the agent.
On the call, the AI offers open times, books the one the caller confirms, and Cal.com sends the caller the confirmation.

n8n: the text summary
When a call ends, Retell writes a short summary of it and sends the call's details to a web address you give it. An n8n workflow listens at that address, texts you the summary and the caller's number through Twilio, and can add the call to a Google Sheet or your CRM.
Retell sends a few updates for every call. Listen for the last one, "call analyzed": it's the one that carries the summary.

Test it before you trust it
Call your business line from another phone and let it ring out. Check four things: the AI answers in your business's name, it asks your questions, the booking shows up in your calendar, and the text reaches your phone. Then read the first week's call transcripts in Retell and tighten the instructions wherever it stumbled.
